The Story of Language Link

Founded by Marisa Gillio & Antonio Di Mario

Language Link was not born in a boardroom. It began at a kitchen table — with a family, a purpose, and a deep understanding of what it feels like to struggle to be heard.

Marisa Gillio and Antonio Di Mario built Language Link from lived experience. As part of an immigrant family, language was never just about words — it was about dignity, access, opportunity, and survival. They saw firsthand how communication barriers affected people in hospitals, courts, schools, and government offices. Important decisions, legal rights, and human dignity were often lost in translation — not only for those who did not speak English, but for anyone who lacked access to clear, appropriate communication.

Marisa, driven by a strong sense of justice and service, began working in the language access field. Antonio, with an entrepreneurial spirit and operational mindset, recognized that the industry lacked structure, fairness, and technology. Interpreters were under-supported, agencies were inefficient, and many individuals were not receiving the quality of communication they deserved.

Together, as partners in life and vision, they decided to build something different — not just a company, but a mission-driven family business. In 2011, Language Link was born.

In the early days, operations were simple. Phones rang at all hours. Schedules were handwritten. Family members helped coordinate assignments. Every interpreter mattered. Every client mattered. Every person mattered. Marisa focused on relationships, quality, and compliance, ensuring that language access was treated as a civil right — not just a service. Antonio focused on building systems, structure, and sustainability so the company could grow without losing its human touch.

As Language Link grew, Marisa and Antonio recognized a deeper challenge affecting the entire language access industry, the lack of a system truly designed by people who understood the work from the inside. Not just administrators. Not just agencies. But interpreters themselves.

From that vision in 2017, InterpretingWorks® was created.

InterpretingWorks was not built in theory. It was built from real-life experience ,  created by interpreters, for interpreters — without ever forgetting the requester, the agency, or the client. The platform was designed with the wisdom gained from years in the field, understanding the real logistical challenges behind every appointment: scheduling complexity, communication gaps, fair distribution of work, interpreter availability, travel coordination, documentation, compliance, and accountability.

InterpretingWorks brought balance to the entire ecosystem:

  • Empowering interpreters with control, transparency, and fair opportunity

  • Supporting agencies with structure, automation, and operational efficiency

  • Helping requesters manage language needs smoothly and reliably

  • Ensuring clients receive consistent, dignified, and effective communication

It was a platform shaped by human experience , where technology serves people, not the other way around.

Over time, the system grew to support hundreds of thousands of appointments per year, transforming how language access services are coordinated while maintaining the personal, human-centered approach that defined Language Link from the beginning.

Language Link became more than a business. It became:

  • A bridge between languages and cultures

  • A voice for those who could not be heard

  • A platform for interpreters to build sustainable and respected careers

  • A technology-driven solution grounded in real-world experience

  • A mission rooted in dignity, equity, and access to appropriate communication for all — not only for those who do not speak English

Today, Language Link still carries the same foundation it started with — family, purpose, and community. What began at a kitchen table grew into a respected organization, but at its heart remains the vision of Marisa Gillio and Antonio Di Mario:

Access to appropriate communication is for everyone. Language access is not a luxury. It is a right.
